INTERNAL USE ONLY

Qualtrics lets you randomize Survey Flow elements, which is a key tool used when assigning control groups.

In this article:

  • Randomizing Survey Flow Elements
  • Grouping Elements

Randomizing Survey Flow Elements

From your Survey Flow, you can randomize:

  • Elements
  • Block order
  • Control groups vs. experimental groups
  • Survey endings
  • Embedded Data fields
  • Branches

To randomize Elements:

  1. Open the Survey Flow.
  2. Click Add a New Element Here.
  3. Click Randomizer.rand.png
  4. Nest the Elements you want to randomize within the Randomizer element.
  5. Change the Randomly present value to the number of elements you want to present.

Note: If you’re assigning participants to experimental and control groups, change the value from 2 to 1.rand2.png
  6. Enable Evenly Present Elements

Note: By default, each element has an equal chance of assignment when the Randomizer is triggered. To smooth out the distribution, “Evenly Present Elements” keeps track of the number of times each element is presented and skews the Randomizer to make certain that all elements are presented (roughly) an equal number of times.rand3.png

Grouping Elements

Use Groups to group elements together for convenient randomization. For example, you can group two different End of Survey elements with the control and the experimental Blocks.rand4.png

To create a Group:

  1. Select Add a New Element Here or Add Below.
  2. Select Group.
  3. Click Untitled Group and rename the Group.
  4. Move the items you wish to pair together nested within the Group.

Now, you may move the Group within a Randomizer. Each Group of elements will be treated as one element within a Randomizer.
