Retroactively Adding Embedded Data

In some cases you can add Embedded Data to a data set even after collecting responses.

In this article:

  • Understanding Embedded Data Sources
  • Using Built-In Embedded Data Fields

Understanding Embedded Data Sources

When you set or assign Embedded Data values directly in your Survey Flowthrough logic or math operations, you save information that is created during the survey session.

However, when you capture information from an outside source, like a URL or a contact list, you pull information into your data that exists somewhere else.

This distinction has some consequences.

For example, you’ve started collecting responses and later realize that there is an Embedded Data field you want to include in your data but forgot to set up in your Survey Flow. If you add an Embedded Data field now, will responses retroactively update to include this field?

The answer depends on whether the value is created in the Survey Flow or captured from another source. If the value is set in your Survey Flow, you cannot add the Embedded Data field after response collection.

If the data existed in another source at the time a response was collected, you can add the Embedded Data field and retroactively update the response.

Using Built-In Qualtrics Fields

Additionally, Qualtrics automatically captures extra information for every survey response. This information is not displayed by default, but can be added to your data set by using one of Qualtrics’ built-in Embedded Data fields.

Below we’ve listed these built-in data fields. At any time, you can add these to your Survey Flow as embedded data and all collected responses will update.

  • Q_Language—Tracks the language a respondent takes the survey in. This information is reported using a two-letter language code.
  • RecipientFirstName—Displays the FirstName field from the contact list.
  • RecipientLastName—Displays the LastName field from the contact list.
  • RecipientEmail—Displays the PrimaryEmail field from the contact list. The Recipient fields can be useful in adding contact information to your data if you have deleted the contact list.
  • ExternalDataReference—Allows you to see the External Data Reference field from the contact list.
  • PanelID—Displays the ID of the contact list to which each respondent belongs. Matching Panel IDs can be found in the Qualtrics IDs section of your Account Settings.
  • UserAgent—Provides information about the respondent’s operating system and browser.
  • Q_URL—Displays the URL first used to access the survey.
  • Referer—Shows the web page respondents were on when they clicked the survey link.
  • Q_TotalDuration—Displays the total duration of the survey response.

ResponseID—Displays the Response ID that Qualtrics assigned for that response. This ID can be used in Web Services, API calls, and other applications.
