Typical Question Types
Each question type has strengths and weaknesses and its own capabilities to gather relevant insights. Let’s review some typical question types.
Multiple Choice
Multiple Choice is the most common question type, which allows respondents to choose from a list of choices. They are very flexible:
- Increase or decrease the number of choices
- Flip the way answers are displayed
- Add images
- Change formatting and colors
Descriptive Text and Graphic
Descriptive Text and Graphic questions don’t have answer choice options. Only text and graphics are displayed. They are often used for introductions or instructions.
Matrix Table
Matrix Table questions can collect more information than Multiple Choice options because you can condense several questions into a single display.
The most common Matrix Table question is built upon the Likert scale. But others, like Bipolar and MaxDiff, are also available in the Editing pane.
Text Entry
Text Entry questions allow open-ended text feedback. Change the size of your text box in the Text Type list in the Editing pane. Under Validation Type, set character limits to restrict response length.
Rank Order
Rank Order questions determine an order of preference for a list of items by respondents selecting a value, typing in values, or dragging and dropping answers into a rank order.
Slider
Slider questions use a draggable bar to indicate preference and are an interactive alternative to Matrix Table questions. For styling, try bars, sliding handles, or stars. Set minimum or maximum values. You can even add labels or alter the number of visible grid lines.
Side by Side
Side by Side options ask multiple questions in a condensed table. Each column is treated as a separate question possessing its own structure, format, and choice options.
